5 Techniques for Managing Stress

As a broker reliant on only commissions, with deals hanging by a thread, and no consistent paycheck, managing stress is crucial. Here are five direct and effective techniques to properly manage stress, along with specific examples:

  1. Meditation: 
  • Embrace the Power of Breath: Engage in deep diaphragmatic or Wim Hof breathing. Try the “4-7-8” technique – inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 8.
  • Practice Presence: Integrate mindfulness meditation to stay focused and make clear-headed decisions. I’ve used Headspace and Peloton’s guided meditation resources before and would recommend them both.
  1. Yoga/Stretching: 
  • Physical Flexibility, Mental Resilience: Incorporate yoga or stretching exercises to release tension and foster adaptability. Find a class nearby or incorporate a simple 10-minute routine from a teacher online into your daily routine.
  1. Exercise:
  • Elevate Your Mood: Regular exercise, be it a run, workout, or stroll, releases endorphins for a positive mindset. I am part of a Wednesday run group and our morning runs are always one of my favorite parts of the week. 
  1. Prayer: 
  • Spiritual Grounding: Take time for reflection and seek solace in a higher power to put challenges into perspective. Create a quiet space for prayer or explore mindfulness practices rooted in various spiritual traditions.
  1. Healthy Diet: 
  • Nourish Your Body, Nourish Your Mind: Maintain a nutrient-dense diet for sustained energy and overall well-being. Include stress-reducing foods such as:
    • Fatty fish rich in Omega-3s (salmon)
    • Complex carbohydrates (brown rice, sweet potatoes)
    • Green tea
    • Berries rich in antioxidants

By incorporating these practical techniques into your daily routine, you can build resilience and navigate the highs and lows of business and life with a grounded and composed demeanor. Remember, mastering stress is not just a skill—it’s a strategic advantage.
