Growing up in the flat plains of Kansas, I’ll never forget the first time hiking up the famous Camelback Mountain here in Phoenix, AZ.
There’s a rush in starting your journey up the mountain, only to be smacked in the face with how much distance there is left to go. The fatigue, resilience, and skill that is acquired over the time spent moving up and down your journey.
Having now coached 30+ people stepping into sales for their first time, I’ve come to realize cold calling is a lot like a good climb….
It’s all about the start
This is the genesis of growth. The mindset to go from discomfort into effort is one of the most impactful decisions one could make. And the reward on the other side is clarity, confidence, and compounding momentum.
Understand highs and lows come
It doesn’t matter if you have been calling for 40 years or you are stepping into your first day, there is an expectation that your results may fluctuate and as a byproduct often will your confidence. I’ve watched people go from slower weeks to breaking company records and it all comes from a consistent effort to not get stuck in the dips and course correct back up the mountain when needed.
Your Confidence will come from a path
In cold calling, knowledge and confidence play wonderfully off of each other. But part of climbing is that you may start from a lower position. As frustrating as it is, you can’t climb a mountain in one step. You move most effectively when it is from one path marker to the next. The best hikers stick to the exact route they know will take them from point A to B in the most effective and efficient manner (whatever that looks like for you).
Here at OneSource our path is the Science of Cold Calling and it is how we move everyone at our company up the mountain.
There’s highs and lows in the arena. But don’t get so caught up in the climb that you forget to stop for a second and enjoy the view.
